CaPROWN Hosts Zonal Meetings Across Cameroon

We are excited to announce the upcoming Western and Central Zonal Meetings of the Cameroon Professional Research-Oriented Women Network (CaPROWN). These regional gatherings are part of our ongoing efforts to connect, empower, and support female researchers across Cameroon and the African continent.

These zonal meetings are a crucial part of our mission to empower female researchers, amplify their voices, and accelerate their impact. We encourage all CaPROWN members and interested participants to  attend these important gatherings.

Dr. Nfor Vivian Tanyu

Dr. Nfor Vivian Tanyu delivered an engaging keynote address titled 'Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: What Future for Women in Academia.' She captivated participants with insights into data science, its applications, and its importance in research. Additionally, she explored Artificial Intelligence, discussing its potential benefits and challenges in the research field.

Prof. Fonteh Marie Niba

Prof. Fonteh Marie Niba presented on 'Scientific and Grant Writing,' analyzing essential aspects of crafting a strong scientific paper and sharing important tips and strategies for grant writing. The first part focused on understanding the fundamentals of scientific writing and the reasons why researchers should prioritize publishing their work.

Prof. Tonjock Rosemary

Prof. Tonjock Rosemary presented on 'Grants and Funding Opportunities,' focusing on Fulbright and Humboldt Fellowships. She urged members to recognize scholarships, fellowships, and grants as vital tools for researchers. By sharing tips for success, she emphasized the competitive nature of these awards, reassuring participants that with determination, they are attainable.

Virtual Presentation

Prof. Eunice Fombele delivered a virtual presentation titled 'Navigating the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Ethics to Enhance Research Quality and Impact.' She captivated the audience with insights into the opportunities AI presents for researchers, addressed ethical considerations in its use, and outlined the challenges it poses. The session ended with vibrant interactions and questions from participants.

Prof. Fai Lilian

Prof. Fai Lilian presented on 'Work-Life Balance and Career Growth for Women in Academia.' She educated participants on integrating family, societal, and professional responsibilities to prevent burnout among female researchers. She outlined the benefits of work-life balance and shared strategies for improvement. The presentation was thrilling and sparked lively interactions and contributions from nearly all attendees

Dr. Ebanga Echi Joan Eyong

Dr. Ebanga Echi Joan Eyong presented on 'Living Healthy as We Age: How to Prevent and Control Major Diseases.' She defined aging, highlighted different human organ systems and their functions, and discussed common health challenges we face as we age. These include hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, chronic kidney disease, coronary heart disease, arthritis, heart failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Prof Marceline Djuidje

Prof. Marceline defined the "pyramid of evidence," assessing the strength and reliability of different types of evidence. She emphasized crucial steps for conducting a thorough documentary search. The significance of PICO (Population-Intervention-Comparison-Outcomes) questions was highlighted. Participants learned about the hierarchical approach essential for robust research. The session concluded with a coffee break.

Dr. Pierrette Essama Mekongo

Dr. Pierrette Essama Mekongo from the University of Yaoundé II defined AI as technology that mimics human intelligence. She emphasized its significance in course preparation and presentations, sharing examples and links to tools like Gamma AI. She advised caution about AI's accuracy and the need for verification. Participants then engaged in a practical session with open-access AI tools. The segment concluded with lunch.

Dr. Valerie Makoge

Dr. Valerie Makoge offered strategies for effective writing. She emphasized the importance of these strategies in planning research and responding to grant calls. Additionally, she discussed how strong writing skills contribute to overall career advancement. Participants gained valuable insights to enhance their writing abilities. This segment aimed to empower researchers in their professional journeys

During the retreat, participants were encouraged to dedicate time to personal tasks, such as drafting a manuscript introduction or developing a methodology. Activities included an assignment on the evidence pyramid. Participants also engaged in hands-on exercises with AI tools. This time aimed to enhance their research skills and foster creativity. Overall, the retreat provided a supportive environment for personal and professional growth.

CaPROW-Network is organizing for her very first edition, the CaPROWN Academic Writing Retreat (CAWR) August 2021, taking place in Yaounde, Cameroon. From the 26th – 28th of August 2021.
